Tuesday 207: Baby Boarder

painting by Jessica Ives

Every winter the Camden Snow Bowl generously gives fourth graders in Midcoast Maine an opportunity to learn to ski or ride for free — three day passes, equipment, instruction, even warm gloves for those who forgot theirs, all at no cost. This season my husband worked as a snowboard instructor and helped students from Belfast to Warren to Vinalhaven make fresh turns, some for the very first time. Once in a while he got to ride down Coaster or Foxy with a group of seasoned students, he the tallest kid in the pack. Most of his time, however, was spent on the Slipway holding hands, breaking falls, and picking up small but smiling bodies. Bruised but not broken, at the end of the day everyone had fun and learned to love the winter a little more.
